Short Biography:

Dr. Giorgos Mountrakis is an Assistant Professor for the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Previously he was a Postdoctoral Fellow of the National Academies of Science working with United States Geological Survey. He holds a Dipl. Eng. Degree from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Maine. His dissertation was in the area of geospatial information retrieval using intelligent methods. During his graduate studies at the University of Maine he held a Graduate Research Assistantship working for the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis. He was also a Teaching Assistant for the Spatial Information Engineering department.

His research focuses on spatial and spatiotemporal analysis and modeling using spatial analysis and machine learning methods. Current and recent research projects include satellite image analysis, change detection using aerial photographs, urban growth models, deer movement analysis, moose-vehicle collision hotspots and forest uniqueness assessment.

His teaching includes courses in remote sensing, digital image analysis, spatial analysis and artificial intelligence in geography.

Dr. Mountrakis has published in numerous journals and books and has presented his work in various international conferences. He is the recipient of several awards in recognition of his academic and research achievements, including scholarship, research, thesis and travel awards. Recently he was awarded the prestigious New Investigator award from NASA.
